This is my ‘behind-the-scenes’ walkthrough for bringing soul and character into your home using three of my favourite styling principles: layering textiles, mixing eras, and storytelling through objects.

1. Layer Textiles for Warmth and Depth

“A worn linen throw instantly softens modern furniture.”

Step 1: Choose your base furniture

  • Start with a clean, modern piece such as a neutral-toned sofa, a structured accent chair, or even a bench.

  • This works best when the furniture has hard edges or minimal texture. It is simple, not overpowering, yet it provides a solid starting point.

Step 2: Select your vintage or pre-loved textile

  • Go for a linen throw, handwoven blanket, or faded quilt. Look for signs of wear: frayed edges and sun-faded colour. Don’t think this is bad; this type of wear gives character!

Step 3: Pose intentionally

  • Drape your textile over the back or arm of the furniture. I am not against folding it neatly; this is what I personally do. But make it ‘available’, sending a clear message that it is not a piece of decor but something to be enjoyed.

  • Let it puddle slightly or show off a patchwork edge.

Optional Touch: Add vintage cushions with mismatched patterns for even more texture layering.
